The Island · Bering Sea
In May 2011 the island stopped answering.
A short history
The Soviet Union colonises islands in the Bering Sea. Cold War tension makes them worth having.
Military goes up: Brensk, Norinsk, a northern and a southern base, and a spy transmitter on Seraja, the highest mountain.
The politics change. The radar site is decommissioned and the launchers go elsewhere. The island is left to civilians.
Fishing, two ports, coal. Vorkuta the capital in the north. Tara the large southern port. Jalovisko a collective farm. The Sebjan coal mine, railway-linked to Tara.
About 1,100 people live here.
Moscow decides to abandon its remote localities. Namalsk is on the list.
The island stops responding. Communication ceases, surveys fail, and the military is sent.
Namalsk was made by Adam “Sumrak” Françu, who is now Creative Lead on DayZ itself. This is not a random workshop map. His own description of the place is still the best one:
“At first glance a deserted island. At second, not so.”
What is still here
Every one of these was somewhere ordinary first — a port, a farm, a mine, a barracks. They are all still standing. 131 recorded deaths happened across the island, and they cluster where the people used to be.
The highest mountain. They put a spy transmitter on top of it.
Military. Went up in the fifties, when these islands were worth having.
4 lives have ended hereMilitary, like Brensk. The politics that built it stopped mattering in the seventies.
2 lives have ended hereThe weather
EVR storms and blackouts do a good deal of the killing here. When the alarm goes you get indoors, get a fire lit, and hope you picked the right building. Caught out in the open it puts you on the ground and takes about half of you with it — you come round minutes later, injured, somewhere you did not choose.
Plenty of deaths here have nothing to do with anyone shooting at you.
